Style 101: How to Match Shirts and Ties

Welcome back to another week of Style 101. For today’s lesson, Beckett Simonon has compiled a handy infographic highlighting the do’s and don’ts of matching shirts with tie patterns. As Simonon reminds us, there’s no correct way to match shirts and ties, but here are some guidelines that’ll prevent you from looking like an eyesore. Here are some of our favorite tips:

1. Establish the primary color of your shirt, then choose a tie with a similar color anywhere in its pattern.

2. Your tie should always be darker than your shirt.

3. Your collar and tie should be in proportion with each other.

4. Pair large patterns with smaller ones.

5. Avoid mixing patterns that have identical proportions.

6. Your tie should reach the belt buckle or the waistband of the pants.
