Style 101: ‘How Clothes Should Fit’ Guide

By now, it’s common knowledge that clothes with fitted cuts and suits that are tailored make you look and feel better. Today’s Style 101 study sheet is a short and straightforward guide to ensuring clothing fits properly. Inspired by a Reddit booklet, this “How Clothes Should Fit” manual created by Ilias Ismanalijev goes through all of the essentials to a man’s wardrobe: dress shirts, blazers/suit jackets, coats, chinos, dress trousers, jeans, ties and shoes.

Here are some tips we particularly like:

Dress shirts: “Your cuffs should meet the point where your palm begins (about 2cm up from your wrist bone). It should be tight enough that your thumb notch at your wrist will stop the cuff from moving up your hand.”

Blazer/Suit jackets: “While buttoned, the jacket should not pull across the chest (fabric making an ‘X’ shape across your abdomen). Similarly, it should not pull across the shoulders when arms are folded.”

Dress trousers: “…dress trousers should not be tight to the leg, nor billowing but, lie comfortably close to the leg without resistance but they will naturally drape more.”

Jeans: “Avoid bootcut.”

Shoes: “The shoe should exert little to no pressure on the sides of your feet. This should be obvious, but walking should be comfortable and take no effort.”
