Samsung Galaxy Gear

The battle to conquer the wrist is starting. Sony’s Smartwatch 2 and the Pebble are just the beginning of a new trend for smartwatches. Samsung’s joined the ring with its own Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The rather chunky-looking wearable has a 1.63-inch (320 x 320 resolution) touchscreen display, 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a 315mAh battery that’s said to last up to 25 hours on a charge.

Additionally, the Galaxy Gear has a gyroscope, accelerometer and pedometer. Make no mistake, the Galaxy Gear is not a standalone gadget. It can make calls and display notifications and even take pictures and video with the 1.9-megapixel camera mounted on its strap, but it’s still a companion device that tethers to a smartphone or tablet — in this case, it will compatible with the Galaxy Note 3.0 and Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) at launch. Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II owners that update to Android 4.3 in October will also gain Galaxy Gear compatibility.

The Galaxy Gear goes on sale on October 2 for $299.99 in six different colors.
