Bitters: A Spirited History of a Classic Cure-All, with Cocktails, Recipes, and Formulas

BittersASpiritedHistoryBook

Cocktails bring us back to those childhood memories of when we mixed any and everything and served it up to the nearest victim. We thought we were making something great, but thankfully no one died. I would love to say making cocktails is an easy task, but it’s not, and requires instruction and investment. It’s easy to throw together a gin and tonic or a vodka cranberry or even buy a pre-made cocktail, but when we’re looking to build a cocktail (And I mean, you’re building flavors from the foundation up), you need some advice. One of the most popular cocktails, a Manhattan requires careful instructions and a bit of technique.

Bitters is a key ingredient to transforming a drink from a bland drink to a well-balanced cocktail. Bitters makes an otherwise bland whiskey drink into the famous Manhattan. We picked up Bitters: A Spirited History of a Classic Cure-All, with Cocktails, Recipes, and Formulas by Brad Thomas Parsons and the book showed us a bit of magic behind making bitters and constructing cocktails. Parsons focuses on the history, creating/making and mixing with bitters. This book reads more like a cookbook which is helpful when you’re stuck making drinks for friends. We would prefer more pictures to better show the techniques, but this book has the most extensive information on bitters that we’ve found. Start with this book for your home bar.
