Budget Booze: W. L. Weller Special Reserve Bourbon

The most famous bourbon ever, Pappy Van Winkle has many cousins and you could say brothers as there are many different whiskeys distilled in the same location, Buffalo Trace Distillery. W.L. Weller Special Reserve Bourbon has a similar mash bill to expensive bourbons, but at a fraction of the cost from $15 and up. This is the original wheated bourbon that is made from corn, wheat and malt, instead of corn, rye and malt, so there is less of a rye spiciness in flavor. The Special Reserve has a robust bright amber color, sweet nose that has hints of carmel, toasted vanilla, maple and smoke. At under twenty bucks this bourbon has a bit of a burn, but it is flavorful and can be served neat or on the rocks. Give this to your so-called bourbon geek friend and see if he can figure out the cost. You could say this is Pappy Van Winkle’s underrated younger brother. Like Wodka Vodka W.L. Weller produces delicious affordable quality booze.
