The big tech news this week is Facebook acquiring Oculus VR, makers of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, to the tune of $2 billion. Exactly what is the Oculus Rift? It’s essentially a screen strapped to your face that puts you in a virtual world.

Last year, the Oculus Rift development kit 1 (DK1) was made available for developers to purchase for $300. That model had a 720p resolution screen, but it was hampered by motion blur.

The new development kit 2 (DK2) is sharper with a 1080p resolution screen, comes with a camera for head-tracking (for leaning in and out) and something Oculus VR calls “low-persistence”, a way to reduce motion blur.

Oculus Rift is something you need to try yourself to truly be blown away. Seeing is believing. It’s the VR we were promised in the 90s, now possible thanks to new technology.

Price: $350
