Sony a7S

Sony is killing it right now. Between its APS-C A5000/a6000 and full-frame Sony a7/a7r, the company just can’t do any wrong when it comes to designing stylish (and spec-ed out) compact mirrorless cameras.

The third member of the a7 family, the a7S is a full-frame compact mirrorless camera, but with a focus on video recording: 4K resolution video recording at 3840 x 2160 pixels at 60p, 60i, 30p and 24p. Users can toggle between full-frame and APS-C mode, which enables 120fps slow-motion video recording in 720p.

To suit video people, the a7S is equipped with a whopping ISO 200-102400 (expandable to 409600), clean 4K HDMI video out and S-Log2 gamma (a way to expand dynamic range by up to 1,300 percent).

Other features include a tilt-able 3-inch LCD screen with 921,600 dots, built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, XGA OLED electronic viewfinder.

The only real letdown is that the a7S has fewer megapixels than the a7 and a7R: only 12.2-megapixels versus the 24.3 and 36.5-megapixels, respectively. But for video, that won’t matter anyway because this puppy does 4K and those don’t.

Pricing and release are TBA, but expect it to probably cost in the ballpark of the a7/a7R, which is between $1,700 and $2,300.
