While we’re enamored by the Withings Activité Fitness Watch, we understand that you may want something that’s more than just a fitness tracker. If you’re an Android user, you’re in luck, because Google and LG recently announced the G Watch, an unequivocally minimalist Android Wear-based smartwatch.
The square smartwatch has a 1.65-inch IPS display (280 x 280 resolution), 1.2GHz processor, 4GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM, a 400mAh battery and a 9-axis accelerometer, compass and gyro. Also, like so many of today’s smartphones, the G Watch is IP67 water and dust resistant.
As part of Google’s Android Wear initiative, the G Watch has an always-on display that serves up useful notifications from your smartphone (paired via Bluetooth LE). You can respond to emails, text messages, check the weather and more by tapping its touchscreen or using speech. Think of it as your very own Google Now companion on your wrist.
The only caveat is the G Watch only works with smartphones running Android 4.3 KitKat or higher. (Time to update if you’re still running an older version of Android.)
And yes, the LG G Watch does come in another color other than Black Titan. You can get one in White Gold as well.
