Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition

Virtual reality is seeing a resurgence after its failed experiments in the ’80s. With Facebook’s Oculus VR and the Oculus Rift headset and Sony’s Project Morpheus headset for the PlayStation 4, VR actually stands a chance of becoming the ultimate immersive experience. It’s not surprising that Samsung wants a piece of the pie, too.

With a year of help from Oculus VR, Samsung’s developed its own VR headset called the Gear VR. Unlike the Rift and Project Morpheus, which are only developers kits right now, the Gear VR is not a full-fledged standalone VR headset. It requires a Galaxy Note 4 to be slotted in for it to come to life.

Similarly, though, the Gear VR is not a finished product. Oculus VR’s John Carmack calls the headset an “Innovator Edition” which is fancy words for dev kit. Obviously VR still has a long ways to go before it’s perfect and we still need a ton of content in order to make this more than just a passing fad, but Samsung’s adamant about its future.

Gear VR features a touchpad on its side, much like Google Glass, for navigation. It will ship with four beta experiences: Oculus Home, Oculus Cinema, Oculus 360 Videos and Oculus 360 Photos.
