Kiyomizu-Dera – Get Your Pic and GTFO

Kiyomizu-Dera has one of the most beautiful views in all of Kyoto, probably second to Fushimi Inari-taisha. Let me first say, that the view was fucking amazing! Awesome. Incredible. Like going to the Empire State Building in New York, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Kiyomizu-Dera is a must. It is a hike to get there. If the weather is at all decent, and I mean a weekday with rain, nearly a Typhoon warning is probably were the crowds will start drop off. Your walking straight uphill on a tiny road. In Asia, if there isn’t a sidewalk, you’re taking a chance on your life every step.

To get there, you can take the subway to Kiyomizu-Gojo Station then walk or take a taxi as close to the top as possible. The hike from the train station is 1 mile mostly uphill. It’s a nice hike on a sunny day, but with the crowds all the time, it’s stop and go.

Like all temples in Japan there’s an area to cleanse and purify yourself before you enter. They also have a place to buy gifts. My architecture friends will probably argue this is awesome and deserves time to visit. Get your ass up the hill, get your pictures of this amazing view and structure, that is mind-blowing, then eat your face off and get out of there.
