Nikon Df

As any camera enthusiast will tell you, Nikon’s F-series SLR film cameras are still as coveted today as they were when the company introduced them in 1959. In today’s sea of plastic design, it’s quite obvious we’ve lost the tasteful metal design and myriad of buttons that stood for quality and professionalism from decades ago.

Back in the day, using a camera to take photos (even everyday photos) wasn’t something everyone could do. It wasn’t as simple as a press of the button. Auto-mode didn’t exist and every setting from ISO to shutter speed had to be set manually.

It was a technical skill — one that my grandfather, who was a professional photographer basked in.

The Nikon Df is the re-imagining of a digital full-frame lens camera for the hardcore photographer. It’s — in Nikon’s words — “pure photography.” From its F-inspired looks to the sheer number of knobs and dials, the Df is a homage to the company’s best from almost 55 years ago.

The 16.2-megapixel camera uses the same image processor as the company’s high-end D4 DSLR and has an ISO range from 100-12800. On the rear, you’ll find a 3.2-inch display with 921k-dots. In every respect, the Df is a still-image camera first; this camera doesn’t shoot video (at all).

But perhaps the best part is that the Df is compatible with every single F mount Nikkor lens. You really can’t get better than vintage glass.

A camera with this type of craftsmanship does come at a hefty price, though: $2,749.95 for the body only and $2,999.95 with a special edition 50mm f/1.8G kit lens. It’ll be available later this month in silver and black or all black.

Price: $2,749.95 (body only)
