In the last year, Sony’s moved quickly to kill off its NEX mirrorless camera branding in favor of the Alpha α moniker. The transition is now complete. The brand new α5100 aka A5100 is the NEX-5T’s replacement.
The Sony A5100 sits in-between the A5000 and the A6000, two excellent cameras (I own the A6000 and I love its speed and performance). The 224 g (body) camera is the world’s lightest interchangeable lens camera with an APS-C image sensor and it sure packs a serious punch: 24.3-megapixel Exmore CMOS image sensor, Bionz X image processing engine, 6 frames per second continuous shooting, XAVC-S Full HD 1080p video recording, Wi-Fi and NFC.
All of the goodies from the A6000 also make the jump over to the A5100 including the 179-point Phase-detection AF, 25-point Contrast-detection, ultra fast AF (0.07 seconds), and a handful of AF modes (lock-on AF, Eye AF, etc.)
As the successor to the NEX-5T, the A5100 still retains its 3.0-inch 180-degree flip-up touchscreen (yes!). It has a grip designed specifically to be held easily with your thumb (for those selfies — what else?) and a zoom lever for super-steady zoom operation (great for video recording).
