The first company out with a modern smartwatch is now on its sixth try. On the heels of the LG G Watch R, Samsung announced its brand new Gear S smartwatch. Rather than follow the crowd, the Gear S goes with a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display (360 x 480 resolution) — the largest from the company yet — that feels a hybrid of its Gear 2 and Gear Fit.
The Gear S sports a 1.0GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, and a 300mAh battery. The biggest differentiator between the Gear S and its predecessors and its competitors is that it’s a standalone communicator. In addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1, it also has a 3G and 2G antenna, which means it can make calls and receive data directly without needing to be tethered to a smartphone or tablet.
There’s also a heart rate monitor and Nike+ integration, and runs Samsung’s own Tizen OS. And of course, the Gear S is IP67 dust and water-resistant rated.
It’s one step closer to the Dick Tracy dream. The Gear S comes out this October and will be available in black or white.
