Sugar Overload at Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki

As much as my teeth love sugar as evidence by my 30+ cavities, I’m not that big on desserts. I gorge on candy, but not so much desserts and pastries. When I heard that Japan has one of the top bakeries in the world, it wasn’t on my to-do list, but I was in the area and in between meals, why not.

I had breakfast and then about 45 minutes later I was in front of Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki. This called for an espresso, no sugar though as I was about to overload on sugar. Coffee is a diuretic, so you’re gonna eat more as disgusting as that may sound – true story.

Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki is one of those places that doesn’t make a bad thing, they’re all good and some are great. Their macaroons look to be a big seller as it takes up a good part of their display space. I was told they’re known for their green tea éclair and their special green tea cake, I ordered both. They were so fresh and soft, and had such a defined matcha flavor. Both cake and eclair were pretty much 90% sugar though. Was it the best bakery in the world? Guess so. Mind not blown. I haven’t found a bakery like that yet. I find that the amount of sugar in some of so-called best bakeries in the world is overkill. Similar to cult restaurants, the flavors can be so intense and too much that your palate is fried by the end of the meal.

When at Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki, get the green tea éclair, and a few macaroons. Really good.

As I was leaving, the waitress presented me with a little doggy bag chocolate covered coffee macaroon with an ice pack so it didn’t melt. Over the top, super nice, and the macaroon was the best thing there.
